Bike Stolen? Try Craigslist

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

About 60,000 bikes are stolen in New York City each year, and only 2 percent of them are recovered by their owners, according to a recent blog entry on the NYTimes website. But one lucky owner used Craigslist to recover her stolen bike (read the story here).

Four Professionals Everyone Should Keep on Speed Dial

Tuesday, November 13th, 2007

Productivity and frugality blog, WiseBread, has a great post about the top 6 professionals that you should have in your phone’s contact list…just in case. I’ve narrowed their list down to three and added in one extra professional I think you really should have in case of emergencies:

Attorney: Whether it’s a car accident, medical lawsuit or helping you draw up a will or other important document, everyone will probably need or meet with a lawyer at least once in their lifetime. Before something major happens, do the scouting now:

  • Nolo.com (this is a commercial site but they have good, basic information on how to find a lawyer and understanding fees)

Doctor: Even if it’s just a cold, having a doctor that you can trust can make the world of difference. Build that relationship now before you feel under the weather:

Insurance Agent: Auto, car, life, medical, home owner’s and rental insurance…doesn’t matter what coverage you’ve got, you’ll need a great agent to get the coverage you need and help you get the most out of your claims.

Mechanic: Let’s face it. Someday (could be tomorrow, could be next year), something in your car will break. You’ll need a great mechanic you can trust to get your car back on the road - and fast. Otherwise, you’ll be back in the shop before you know it.

What professional couldn’t you live without? Share your thoughts in the Comments section below! (Thanks, WiseBread!)

It’s Not Easy Being Green

Friday, August 10th, 2007

While more and more people are commuting by bike in order to “go green,” many are facing an unfortunate consequence: they’ve fallen victim to bike theft.

Whether you’re riding to work, the store or just on a family bike ride, take proper and watchful care of your bike with these top tips:

  1. Self-register your bike
-Take a good picture of your bike. On the back, put your bike’s make, model and license or registration, serial number and any distinguishing features. Store in a safe place at home – not on your bike!
  2. -Keep copies of all warranties, manuals, receipts and other documents. Put them all in a folder and store this information in a safe place either at home or at work.

  3. Register your bike with local police, if you can.
-The police may be able to recover bikes quickly if they are registered in advance and have the appropriate information including make, model, color and serial number.
  4. WHN TIP:Usually, the police will not give you back your bike unless they have proof that it belongs to you. In addition, it helps the police identify and locate the proper owner.

  5. Register your bike with the manufacturer
-Some companies offer online warranty registration, which can also function as a written record in case your bike is stolen.
  6. You can also register your bike with the National Bike Registry (NBR), a national database which helps recover stolen bikes by working together with over 16,000 police departments across the country. There is, however, a small fee to register your bike with this company.
