Tax Time Tips
Friday, April 13th, 2007Remember, tax time is one of the only times in the year when people have all of their banking accounts, numbers and family financial history in one place (read: prime time for identity thieves!).
Keep your personal and financial information safe with these tips from Beth Givens, director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse:
1. Throwing away old records: Use a cross-cut shredder before discarding.
2. Make sure you know what to keep and what to toss: read the IRS’ publication on Recordkeeping.
3. E-filing: Check your to see if your spyware and anti-virus software is turned on and up-to-date before entering data and sending off your completed forms.
4. Direct deposit refunds or payments: Make sure to double-triple-quadruple check your account and routing numbers on your paper or online forms before sending them in.
